Lankayan Island, is a remote island off Sabah Malaysia. A small dive resort built in 1997 is the only resident of the island. The surrounding waters offer incredible variety of corals, fish, sea horses, shark and turtle species. In 2003, Lankayan Island was declared part of the Sugud Islands Marine Conservation Area (SIMCA). As part of SIMCA, all resource harvesting (fishing etc.) will be prohibited by the state government of Sabah, Malaysia. Green and hawksbill turtles nest on the shores. Researchers collect the eggs, incubate them keeping them safe from predators, then release them back to the ocean. Here a fresh batch of baby turtles launches into the vast ocean instinctually heading out to sea.
