Tanzania, 2021. Limited edition print of 6 – To see a rhinoceros in the wild these days is becoming a rare occasion as rhinoceros numbers have plummeted in the last century. On this particular trip to Tanzania, I had hoped to see one but knew my chances were slim. My guide and I were checking out a particular ecosystem where rhinoceros are found toward the end of our day. We were driving really slow. They have incredible hearing and sense of smell to make up for their poor eyesight. Seemingly out of nowhere out jumps a black rhinoceros from some thick brush. We immediately shut our car off and kept really quiet hoping it would stay in the area. After a few tense moments it began feeding out in the open. In wildlife photography, luck can be equally as important as skill. Photo © copyright by Derek Nielsen
