Spending time around potentially dangerous wild animals always requires a plan and preparation. In the fall of 2020, I spent six weeks tracking grizzly bears in Grand Teton National Park. I gained so much respect for these beautiful animals. This animal was clearly picking up all kinds of smells going through the air. They always knew I was there long before I knew they were. Being bear-aware was crucial to my own survival. Open Edition copyright Derek Nielsen Photography
