A powerful silverback enters an opening ahead of his family to greet this day’s visitors. His job; to keep his family safe from all threats. Rival families, poachers, bachelor males, tourist. Each poses a different threat to his family. Lucky for us he is kind. A generous species willing to give us a glimpse into his family life. After inspecting our group, he allows his family to greet us. Our palms sweating with hearts racing, this family of 22 gorillas goes about their day within feet of where we are standing on this mountain side jungle clearing. He watches the whole dynamic unfold keeping a watchful eye. No one challenges his rule. He is king.
