Tanzania 2023
On my return visit to the Hadzabe tribe of Tanzania, I was greeted as a welcome friend. My first experience was so memorable I was uncertain how anything could top that. I brought my family this time. It was important to me for them to meet. I wanted my family to have a reference to what I was describing. A way of life so relatively untouched by modern society. The transformation that comes from immersing yourself inside a community so foreign to what you are accustomed to is priceless. This image was taken while trekking through the bush on a hunt. I was scrambling through the bush, trying hard to keep up with the hunters as they dodged in and out, searching for wildlife to feed their tribe. This young man was leading the charge deeper and deeper into the bush when he caught the movement of a small fox. Absolute chaos ensued, and when he finally came to a rest, I was able to snap this image. And while it was hard to see the fox’s life taken, I understood how it would help sustain the tribe. This is the ultimate form of sustainable living. Limited edition fine art print of 6. Photo © Derek Nielsen Photography
